August 10, 2020

Have you been told that the time has come to book in for wisdom teeth removal? Wondering what happens during the wisdom teeth removal process? If this applies to you, then you might want to read through this blog post to learn more.

What are your wisdom teeth and why might you have them removed?

First of all, let’s take a look at what your wisdom teeth actually are. Your wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that are found in the back of your mouth. for the most part, they usually grow between the ages of 17 and 25 and they can be picked up during an x-ray.

There are a number of reasons why you may end up being recommended to have your wisdom teeth removed. Some people need to have them removed as they are impacted. This means that they are trapped within your gums or your jawbone.

Other people may need them removed because they are growing at a funny angle; which then means that they press against your other teeth causing you pain. Another reason is that the dentist feels that your mouth simply isn’t big enough to make space for all of those additional teeth. You may even be recommended to have them removed if you have cavities or you have gum disease.

What is the wisdom teeth removal process?

You will initially meet with the oral surgeon, where you will take about the wisdom teeth removal process and what to expect. They will want to discuss with you any specific health problems that you may have, as well as any drugs that you need to take on a regular basis. This is also your chance to ask any questions that you may have about the procedure and discuss with your dentist, or the surgeon carrying out the removal, the anaesthesia that you will need.

This may be local, IV sedation or general anaesthetic, depending on the extent of the surgery that you need to have carried out.

The wisdom teeth removal surgery should only take around 45 minutes to complete. Your doctor will often need to cut the gums or bones in order to get the teeth out. If they do, then you will need to have the wounds stitched shut, as this will help them to heal quickly. These stitches will dissolve after a few days.

You should plan to take some time off work, or school if you are younger, as you need to rest after your surgery. However, this should only be for a short time. There should be minimal, to no pain after the surgery. You may find that you have some mild swelling and this can be uncomfortable, but this will only last around 3 days. The actual healing can take a few weeks, so you will need to be gentle with your mouth in this time.
